CLC Network offers a growing number of online courses to middle and high school students. Beginning with two courses in 2006, we now provide six courses to middle school students who are considered academically talented and highly motivated. We developed these courses at the urging of parents and school administrators. Now, given the expectations that all high school graduates have successfully taken two years of a world language, we are providing an online world language course (Spanish I) for students who struggle with the mastery of a second language.
Our online course offerings are the following:
For middle school-aged students:
Pre-Algebra
Algebra
Geometry
For high school students:
Spanish I (2010 – 2011)
Spanish I and Spanish II (2011 – 2012)
CLC Network online courses are fully facilitated. Fully facilitated means that a teacher, certified (by the state of Michigan) to teach the content of the course, prepares and delivers the course in an online format. CLC Network teachers develop units of study that have specific beginning and ending points. During the time frame of a particular unit, our teacher interacts with his/her students and the students interact with each other as they complete activities of the unit. All students complete a particular unit at the same time, though there is some variation within the unit.
At CLC Network, we are committed to a cohort model of education. Students begin a course of study together and they travel through the course with the same group of students throughout the year. Students are encouraged to learn together in an online community, depending on interaction with their teacher and with the students within their cohort, or group. As they progress together, students learn from working with other students, as well in working regularly with their teacher. Students do not simply complete assignments and submit them for grading by a little known teacher; rather, the cohort becomes an engaged, online learning community.
CLC Network online teachers develop multi-media curriculum and instructional methods in order to present concepts in a variety of ways. Our online teachers accommodate a variety of learning styles as they teach using video and audio clips, manipulative materials, and online simulations. The online courses receive high marks from students, families and schools for their engaging style and thorough instruction.
We deliver our courses in an asynchronous format using a secure learning management system. Students are generally not required to be online at the same time as their teachers or their peers. Much of the work of class happens when the students are available to complete their work. Thus, students from many areas of the world and who live in a variety of time zones can be in the same course. Moodle, our learning management system, provides a secure, yet vibrant platform for engaged and meaningful learning.
CLC Network Online Courses are not correspondence or self-taught courses. Since they are fully facilitated, a certified instructor will be in regular contact with your student, answering questions, grading assignments, offering feedback on progress, tracking grades on quizzes and tests, and communicating with families. Students do not work independently, nor is there incentive to “race” through units in order to “get through” content as quickly as possible. Although our courses are rather fast-paced, our intention is to provide the opportunity to learn content deeply. We also emphasize interaction among learners and with teachers as together they explore new concepts engage with new learning.
